Welcome to the official site for the Bude Canal and Harbour Society.

The site will keep members up to date with all things “Bude Canal” but has information about the history and future of the Canal. Features and pictures about activity on the Canal. Current issues of our newsletter “The Tub Boat”, links to other websites such as Bude Stratton Town Council, Bude Museum and the Bude Tourist Board/Visitor Centre and possibly to others.

Barge Workshop

BCHS volunteers will be opening the premises again this year to allow public access to see various heritage artefacts including the Bude Canal Tub Boat.
There is no admission charge and The Workshop will be open 2pm to 5pm every Sunday afternoon from 25th July to 26th September 2010, inclusive.

Guided Walks – 2010

This year BCHS will be conducting guided walks open to the public on the following dates – all Sundays; 25th July, 15th August, 5th and 26th September 2010.

These walks need to be booked and paid at £1 per adult at Bude Visitor Centre, The Crescent Car Park, Bude. Walks start at The Sea Lock, Bude at 2pm and follow the towpath to Helebridge and include a visit to the Barge Workshop to see the Tub Boat. It is a 2 mile walk to Helebridge and thus it is 2 miles to return to Bude.  It is a level walk with stops to view and learn about the Canal. BCHS provide guided walks for outside groups, clubs and societies who wish to visit the Canal either in the Bude area or explore other parts of the Canal on a wider basis. BCHS makes a small charge per person or group.

Please contact us if you have an interest in these walks or visits.

CANAL REGENERATION PROJECT - PHASE TWO

When the project ceased on 31 March 2009 due mainly to the demise of
North Cornwall District Council and the rise of the new unitary authority
Cornwall Council, it was recognised by NCDC and all of its partners,
including BCHS, that three key elements had not been achieved due to
various factors including funding.

A document detailing these factors and recommendations has been produced to urge the authority, funders and others not to forget all the good work
achieved by NCDC and its partners but to build on that and ensure Bude
Canal is able to be what it should be, a viable and vibrant navigable
waterway offering opportunities to all.

Click here to view the document

The Society are very keen to invite comments and hopefully support. Please take the opportunity to read the document, (maybe to also circulate it to your friends), and either email the Society or write to the Society at 4A The Crescent, Bude, EX23 8LE, with your comments.

The Updated Reprint of "BUDE CANAL - PAST AND PRESENT"
is now available

from B.C.H.S. and includes a NEW chapter on the recent Regeneration Project.
The book is STILL only £5.50 and we are able to offer free delivery to EX23 and EX22 postcode areas. Outside of these areas please add £1.00 to the price to cover post and postage. Make cheques payable to "Bude Canal and Harbour Society" and send with your own details to
"Hon Treasurer", Chris Jewell at 4A The Crescent, Bude, Cornwall EX23 8LE.

Also the society has produced a booklet entitled "The Bude Canal - some interesting facts".
It is based on the collation of a number of leaflets about various aspects of the canal.
The booklet will be sold at £1.99 each. It is hoped that BCHS will supply this booklet to some local tourist centres for resale. If you would like a copy send your remittance of £1.99 payable
to"Bude Canal & Harbour Society" - details as above except if you live away from Bude 50p postage.

Canal Regeneration Photo Album

now is the time to take another look!

Chris Jewell has been out photographing the Canal Regeneration from day one . During much of the regeneration period the Canal towpaths, locks and features have been closed to the public. Now you can see how the wonderful regeneration took place - We have had a resuffle of the photos so to speak, taken some off and added some NEW ones. Curently there are 422 photographs from Chris' album and they are here for you to enjoy. Remember the photos are copyrighted to Chris so don't abuse his hard work - feel free to email comments.

Begin your voyage of discovery of Bude Canal Regeneration here

Start by clicking on the albums and then the pictures to enlarge them and move back and forth to view them - there is a help button too - please be patient - the pictures are detailed and some computers will take a few more seconds to download - it's worth the wait!

The Future of Canal Day

Taken from the new Autumn Tub Boat
Following discussions with Bude Stratton Town Council about the events -
Canal Day and Gurney Day - certain changes have been agreed by the Trustees.

1. The event will be called "Bude-Stratton Heritage Weekend".
2. It will be held over two days to allow for expansion and variety. However for 2010, due to admin complications, it will be held on Sunday 8th August.
3. It will incorporate 'Canal Day' and 'Gurney Day'.
4. The fixed day is being changed to the first weekend in August for future years. This is to make the event more available for steam vehicles
etc to attend by avoiding an important steam fair in Cornwall.
5. BCHS will continue to liaise with BSTC in planning and arranging the event.

Hopefully this will help it to become known and increase its popularity.
Chris Jewell
